Canada Trip Part 1, Remove DP-Tuner to start truck.

Folks,

This is part one of my problems while fishing in canada.

Still need to get with Jody, but wanted folks to know what I went through.

Went fishing all day monday, came off lake to load up to head back to the cabin and truck would not start. Symptom was, ABS and Check Engine light came on, ABS light would go out but SRS just stayed on. No glow light either. No white smoke, nothing. just crank and crank. Screwed around for about 1/2 hour and all of a sudden the glow light lit up and she started. WHEW!!!

Went back to cabin, got unloaded and decided to go for some supplies. Started truck left idle to grab something from the cabin. While away the truck killed and would not start again. GLAD it happened at the Cabin. :-)

Spent 30 min on phone with Ford dealer we stepped through everything he had in his schematic. Nothing helped. He asked if I had a chip installed and told him I had a DP-Tuner. He said he had seen this behavior before with chips. So, I spent another hour removing my DP-Tuner :-(. Truck fired right up. DP-Tuner is now wrapped a static bag sitting under dash. Before I reconnect I will talking to Jody at DP-Tuner.

Stay tuned for part 2 of my canada trip, it actually get worse. :-)

Ray

Did you have the chip taped into place? A loose chip will cause these problems.

It sounds like either the pcm board wasn't cleaned properly of all the silicone, or too much of the brass was removed from it and there is a bad connection. The other thing it could be is a wire in the control cable is bad, but that is the least likely scenario.

Ditto...so how was the fishing in canada, I used to go to the Lake of the Woods every year at this time, in fact the people I go with are there right now.

Fishing was good.

I spoke to jody and he says I should be able to put the chip back in.

I am going to recheck the connector before I do that.

Ray,

I am checking on the chip shipment status. You last spoke to Jody on the 13th about sending it back and we have not received it yet. He is curious about why this happend after having had the chip for a couple of months. Electronics do go out, but this is strange has to how it went out.

Thanks,

Diane

because of the way the cable goes through the pillar it is going to be painful to get it out. I am going to try to send the chip back next week.

Chip was sent to Jody. He tested the chip and the chip is fine. When the chip first started causing problems it was set to position 2 (80 econ). Then I set it to position 0 (stock). Well, turns out I am having some sort of problem reading the documentation and set the chip to position 0 (no-start). So, when I get the chip back I will try position 2 (80 econ) and see what happens. If this does not work, I will assume I f'd up the connection on the PCM and pass on the chip all together. :-(

From the sales reciept:
0-Stock
1-60 Tow
2-80 Econ
3-120 Race

I read about "no-start" on Jody's website. I still don't understand my switch cheat sheet. Even though this appears to be a stupid user error, Jody has been very helpful and patient. Thanks Jody!

Regards
Ray

Got chip back from Jody. His tests showed the chip is good. Reinstalled today (Sunday 9/13). And the truck started first time. I drove it around and now it seems to start intermittantly. I have another message into Jody. The good news is I have gotten really good and removing and reinstalling the chip. I will be carrying the necessary tools with me, just in case I have to remove the chip on the highway.

Regards
Ray
