I put a reman IP in my van from American Diesel Service. They told me to line up the marks on the pump and engine but to offset the mark on the pump a line width to the passenger side from the engine mark. The van runs great, but it seems to run a little hot (2/3 up the tremp gauge)and I see some black smoke starting at 1/3 throttle. Is this normal or could it be from the timing? Should I line up the marks exactly?
My F250 runs between 1/2 amd 3/4 on the temp gauge. Once it hits 3/4 its like a wall and will not go any higher. I would say you have a little too much smoke if it starts to roll on at only 1/3 power. You have little to loose by trying the timing with the marks lined up as the adjustment is easily changed.
Thanks for the reply David. You're right, I'll line it up and see if there's a difference in smoke and temp. You're also probably right that it won't go higher but I got nervous anyway. What does it do to move the mark to the pass. side, retard or advance and could this cause smoke?
I lined up the marks and the smoke is much less and happens at a little more than half throttle. The temp gauge stays around 1/3 to just under half way now. I do remember the cold/high idle rattle before the problems started and I don't have that rattle now. No change in the sound of the motor once it warms up. As a matter of fact I put a new high idle solenoid in because the old one fell apart. It doesn't work so far. I turned the key to the on position and put a test light on the neg. terminal and to the connector and got nothing. Is there a fuse for this that might have blown from the old one coming apart and where is the temp switch that controls them?
There is a temp sensor/switch near the injector pump that is supposed to activate the advance and high idle. Check to see if its unplugged. Its on the passenger side of the engine. Picture courtesy of Dave.....
Dave S. every time I see that engine Ithnk that it must have been hard to cover it up with a hood....well was it???? I would've tryed to figger a way to mount it ON TOP OF THE HOOD
You were right, it was the temp switch. I turned the key to the on position and wiggled the connector and the solenoid came on and pushed the throttle. I have to clean up that connector and make sure the connection is good. I still don't notice the rattle when cold thought and still see a little more black smoke than I'd like unless I baby the pedal. I'm gonna retard the timing slightly and see if it helps. Right now the lines are lined up.
