This might be a stupid question, but here goes. I'm changing the water pump on a 91 3.0L and in order to remove the fan and clutch, I have to remove the front accessory drive belt. The alternator is the tension point and I know that I have to lossen the alternator and swing it out of the way to relieve tension on the belt. How do I do this? I have a picture of what I think is the tensioner, but I'm not sure how to post it.
No stupid questions, only stupid answers. If you have the style of alternator that uses a slotted bracket just loosen the top & bottom bolts. The alternator will swing and the belt will loosen. Greg
Which bolts do I need loosen? I have a slotted bracket that sits to the right of the alternator. I loosened the bolts attached to that bracket but the alternator didn't move. I figured I had loosened the wrong bolts.
There is also a "Pivot Bolt" that has to be loosened, but not much. Some alternators have one long one that runs through the entire alternator, others have one in the front flange, and one in the rear...just look, you'll see them!
One last question - Do the bolts that I loosened need to be torqued? The 5/8" bolt on the back was on really tight, so I'm wondering if it has to be tightened to a certain value.
