hey guys, i'm thinking about picking up a 1990 ranger 2wd 5-speed for cheap. The problem it has is that the clutch will not engage when you press the petal. the petal goes down like its not connected to anything. does anyone have an idea as to what would cause this problem?
bad master cylinder, bad slave cylinder or both, could also be that the clutch rod is not connected (doubtful). Whatever you are probably looking to R&R the system, about $400 if you have tools etc and do yourself, and lots more if its taken to a shop.
depends how much they are asking and exactly how bad you want it. If its free its a deal.
first of all be sure there is fluid in reservouar, no leaks... Try to bleed first. sometimes it helps... MC failes rarelly, but easy to replace. SC is inside bellhousing. to replace you are to drop tranny.
ok thanks guys. he wants 300 for the truck. so if its not gonna cost me alot in parts ill go for it. i would be doin all the work my self. hopefully its just low on fluid or needs to be bled.
OK so since you can do the work, I would recommend if you need to pull the tranny to go ahead and replace all the components as it is a PIA to change like the slave after you do everythging. as I said above around 3-400$ at autozone for all parts lifetime guarantee. They have stood behind it while I had my stuff out for other problems. besure to plug the shift rails with new metal plugs these are a weak link in these transmission. the plastic ones dry out and leak the fluid by.
yeah, if bleeding would'nt help, MC replacing would not too, and you will drop tranny to replace slave and release bearing do not be lazy... uscrew pressure plate, inspct all, including pilot bearing and replace all bad clutch parts. To get clutch kit is cheapper then to change all part by part. But as I can see usually hydravlic parts lofe is shorter then pressure plate and disk's life.....
