Hey guys, my alternator died on me today and I would like to go a little bigger this time, what size do I want, was it offered with a Bronco and is it a straight switch out?
Rooster - I did the 3G (130 amp) install on my 86 fullsize bronco. My truck runs the V-belts as opposed to the single serpentine belt, but installation is pretty much the same. Here is the link: 3G Install on a 1986 FSB (HUGE DOWNLOAD) - FSB Forums
Also - do a search on 3G on the FTE forum. The 3G (130amp) Alt can be gotten from many year Ford Taurus's. Depending on your year you may need to change the wiring alittle and add a Maxifuse. I think the whole install was around $50 for me (alt, maxifuse, PA Performance Wiring harness and misc.) BTW I got the alternator from the boneyard for around $25. Don't waste large coin on the auto store versions. I have been VERY happy with the install.
ANother note...by doing the 3G upgrade did you know you can change your Bronco from the Mechanical Coolant Fan to a Taurus Electric fan (claimed 2mpg savings and 16 HP increas)? I have all of the parts and in the process of installing today!
go to this website. everything you need for a 3g upgrade is here including the altenators. the prices are great and the quality is as well. im planning on a 160amp myself.
The only problem with getting one from RJM is if you have a problem your truck is down until you can get another one sent out. If you go to any parts store get one for a 94 Mustang 5.0 HO 130amp. You don't need the wire to change it to a single wire you can use the harness you have.
I bought the harness and a pulley from RJM, but wound up not using it.
FSB has a couple of good threads on how to upgrade to a 3g and if you want to know how to do the wiring goes send me a PM or email.
I bought a brand new alt from Auto Zone for 145 bucks w/lifetime warranty
isnt the mounting different for that year alt coming from a mustang. and i dont beleive his current harness would work without a rewire. If the truck didnt come with a 3g already then either modifing his current harness or buy the plug and play harness from that site. also from all the years ive been on fsb i have not heard of any problems with those altenators. but you do hear of alt issues when buying from your average auto parts store.
thanks for the input guys, I especially like the electric fan from a Taurus idea, but what about this idea, my mechanic suggested going with a bigger battery or even dual batteries instead of a bigger alternator ....so what do ya think?
why more batt power only helps your reserve capacity. nothing to do with while the truck is running. id find a new mechanic. As to the ALt ? yes the 3g is a great upgrade. Also note Summit racing has these great little powder coated bolt in one wire 100 amp ones for $100. bolts in place of stock and run one wire to batt side of coil and done. tear out all the regualtor crap and wiring

Thanks
this is why i suggested the summit one, due to his 1st post.
