Hey guys a few days ago i got this feeling that my clutch felt different then usual. I thought i was jut being paranoid and i ignored it. But today on my way home from school i noticed that my clutch is engaging very high on the pedal. The pedal is almost fully released before it engages. I was just wondering if there is some sort of adjustment for this or what this means for my clutch. Ive got this bad feeling that someday im going to try and take off from a stop sign and im going to have no clutch.
I would first check all the bushings and hinge points in the clutch pedal assy......for wear.
i checked all the bushings under the dash on the pedal assembly, everything looks fine and all the pedals are tight with no play in any of the hinge points or anything.
i guess its time for a clutch. Is there some way to check if i have a SMF or DMF? I bought this truck august/2007 and the PO claimed it has the original clutch in it. But everybody ive talked to said the chances of the clutch being original when the truck has 325,000 km on it is pretty slim.
Will it be bad if i keep driving the truck like this? What will happen? And does anybody know around how much it is going to cost to get a new clutch? I just started school a month ago and funds are very very tight right now.
you can replace it youself and do a solid flywheel conversion for about 5-600 bux. the worst thing that could happen is the truck wont go anywhere you might be able to just buy a clutch kit and replace that and leave you flywheel alone but its always better to have it re surfaced which i dont think is possible on a dmf. but if funds are tight id just get an auto zone clutch set and if it goes out its lifetime warrantied and at that time you could possibly get a new flywheel. if you do the job yourself get a tranny jack, youll need it
well i called a few places today to see about getting my clutch replaced(im still debating whether i should try to do it myself or pay someone to do it.) one place i called said it will be about $1700 for a DMF setup but if they can use my original flywheel then it will be around $900. He actually recommended that i go with a SMF and he said it will cost $1400 for the SMF but he also recommened getting the upgraded 12" SMF from Luk for $1600.
the other place said it will be $1600 for a luk SMF setup and when i asked about the upgraded 12" clutch setup from luk he got confussed and said they just install what comes from luk?!
then theres another tranny place around here which is the company my dad usually chooses. they rebuilt a auto tranny in a 87 F150 he used to have and they just did a rebuild on a C4 last week thats going into my dads 1964 Comet which is going to be set up as a mild race car but also be used for cruising on the weekends. my dad usually chooses this company because they used to run as a tranny/chop shop with my uncle(dads brother) many years ago, but they have since gone to the good side and now they are just a tranny shop. but they usually give my dad a good deal because of the fact they know his brother so this is the company ill most likely choose because i know they are going to give me a good deal. im still waiting on a quote from them for changing my clutch.
i was wondering who on here has changed there clutch and whether they went with a DMF or SMF? Im still undecided. Also whats the different between the stock size of clutch and the upgraded 12" setup from luk?
Hmm i read all of those threads and it actually confused me even more. I would hate to get the SMF installed and have the noise described in those threads.
One of the companys i talked to said that they do alot of these conversions and he said that about 1 in 4 of the conversions get a bit of gear noise at idle but he said its nothing to worry about. But the shop im thinking of going too didnt say anything about gear noise after the swap. I still have no idea whether i want to do a DMF or a SMF.
