I have a 02 Ranger with the 3.0 L. Just hit 60,000 miles and all of a sudden Im finding it difficult to turn. When I turn my wheel to the right its easy as cake, but when I turn to the left I can feel it tighten up.(Not so much having to wrench down on it, but its just not what it was). Its just recently started making a whining noise that comes and goes but not often when I start up. Ive already checked all my lines, their fine and tight. And its full of fluild. Any suggestions?
first of all check metal tubes from valve body to rack, they may be bent, clogged inside... , but usually this is valve body issue. I do not recomend you to fix valve body, just replace it, replace seals and change PS fluid. The real problem is to find PS valve body... I did not find genue part and had to put ZF valve body in, but ithas shaft with a bit bigger diameter.... so look for old, leaking r'n'p on JY, pull valve body out (fails rarelly), resurface shaft in sealant area and put it in your r'n'p....
ouh... I have 2001 ranger... old ranger may have "classical" steering box with screw, nut and ***** inside. It hase no made of steel tobes, all fluid channels are inside and to pull valve body out you are to take it apart... So clean all inside... There are rapare kits including seals and washers are available on market. I did small steering boxes too. They are like semi's boxes, but smaller. No principal diference....visit TRW.com website. There are service manuals for power steering boxes. You will understand how it is works, how to take it apart and repare and what may fail....
