I have a 1995 Ranger with the 2.3 4 banger. It starts right up great when it has been sitting but after it runs a while when you try to start it again it has to turn over forever and then sputters and spits but catches. then runs fine just hard as heck to start when it is hot.
If you kill it after you first start it, as my son does because he is not so well versed at the stick, it will not start at all. just turn and turn and turn.
Have you done any diagnostics at all on it when it will not start? You know the simple things like fuel pressure, or see if its getting a spark or not? Maybe even a possible bad fuel pressure regulator flooding the truck, check the vacuum hose going to it for fuel in the end of it. Also check in with the N.C. Chapter haven't seen ya down there yet so check it out when you have the time. Keep us posted and we will help if we can.
I havent done any diagnostics. It does almost act like it is a vacuum line with a hole in it. After it starts when it is hot lots of white smoke so it may be a fuel pressure regulator. The spark is definitely there i have checked it. I didnt know as well if it might be a relay getting hot and going bad. I have seen fusable links do that melt then cool down and work right.
thanks i will check the regulator.
CEL = Check Engine Light on???? If so, run this puppy by your favorite autoparts store for a no cost computer trouble code scan & post All code Numbers found, as they can offer up good trouble shooting clues.
At KOEO before you crank the engine, it should light up for a self test, if it isn't burned out, or someone has removed it.
Did this problem come about slowly over time, or suddenly after some event???
If this problem began after a fill up, maybe the fuel distributor messed up the winter vapor pressure recipe & the fuel is boiling & vapor locking the fuel delivery system. Winter calls for fuel vapor pressure adjustment, so we get quicker starts & warm up in cold weather, so when the weather warms up, like the upper 60's we've had lately, that with high under hood temps after shut down = heat soak = vapor lock.
What happens if you cycle the ignition switch from off to on, 4-5 times, pausing to let the fuel pump run for a couple of seconds each time to prime the fuel system, before you crank the engine??? If it'll then immediately start & run, suspect a fuel pressure leak down problem. Maybe a faulty fuel pump check valve, weak pump, leaking injectors.
So a fuel pressure & pressure leak down over time check would help you get an idea whats going on.
More thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.
I wouldnt know if it jsut happened or came over time. My Father -in-law gave me the truck and it had sit for probably a year without being touched. It wouldnt turn over at all and i shorted the selenoid and it fired right up but then wouldnt start after it ran for about 30 min. He wouldnt know what happened with it or not.
He told me it had zero power and wouldnt pull out at all . I got iin it after i got it started and the clutch was mush but i got it going. When i returned i checked the clutch master cylinder and it was bone dry. My dad-in-law said he dint even know it was a hydraulic clutch. the truck has been in the family for like 10 years. WTFO!
I will check those thing you mentioned this weekend when i am tinkering. It has had the dash and some of the swithces in the column replaced as well and is a mess. the sipers wont work but power is getting to the motor. It is going to be my boys in a year or two and i am just tinkering on it.
I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again.
iOK, well with the gas being in there for a year, probably without any stabilizers, its not likely to be in good condition, so consider pumping it out & refilling with some fresh fuel with 1oz/gallon of Techron Concentrate Plus added, then run the treated fuel out & see if it'll make a positive difference.
Then I'd go through this puppy & change all of the fluids & filters to bring All due past & present scheduled maintenance up to date & this would include the specified plugs & wires.
Be sure to check the air filter air box & inlet air tube all the way to the fender, to make sure some varment hasn't gotten in there & made a nest to clog things up.
More thoughts for consideration, let us know how it goes.
Pawpaw where you at in SW VA? My wife is from NE Tennessee and i was a recruiter in Kingsport. Did alot of driving in SW Va . Duffield, Gate City, big stone gap and that area. Thanks for all the help too.
We're close to Roanoke. Wondered as soon as I read your user name if you might have been a Mud Marine, or the like???? Did my time in the Navy an as airedale, plane captian & AEM, turning wrenches on the old AD-5W Guppy in VAW-12 at NAS Quanset Point RI & various carriers from the oldest in the fleet at the time, Essex CVA-9, all the way to the then newest Forestall CVA-59 & Saratoga CVA-60, waaaay back in the late 50's. Wouldn't trade that expierence for anything in the world. One fast way for this youngster to see the world & grow up!!!!
It is funny you did that stuff in the Navy. I am an I level avionics guy in the MArines. Equivalent to an AE/AT. Mostly 2M stuff i have worke drotor and fixed wing so i have seen alot too.
As far as the trouble shooting goes on the Ranger.....hmmmm Cleaned all the intake areas and checked all the vacuum lines. No holes in the lines. I tried cycling the ignition switch like you suggested and it didnt work either. I did notice though that when it does start it is almost like it is flooded. Could this be fuel pressure problem?
