Start by testing the glow plugs.

Unplug each glow plug from the harness and use a 12v test light to test for continuity. The light should come on nice and bright.

How long is the WTS light on when you start it? (looking for approximately 10 seconds for cold start)

Are you getting smoke when it won't start? Maybe in the shutoff sol. circuit or the sol. itself.

I am having almost this exact same problem on my 84. So I am also interested in what could cause this.

Have you verified that your glow plugs are working as per my earlier post?

If they check out, than its time to check for fuel starvation.

While cranking, pop the schrader at the fuel filter head to see if fuel is comming out. You can do this test by yourself if you pop the valve quickly after you stop cranking. An alternative test to cranking is to take the filter assembly off and see if the filter is full of fuel. It should actually spill a little when you take it off.

If that checks out, than crack the torque on one of the injecor lines and crank the engine over to see if fuel is squirting out at the connector. (keep clear of the connector).

If the fuel filter is not full, than you have an air leak in the fuel system and fuel is draining back to the fuel tank upon shut down. The typical symptom is the engine fires up well when hot, but dies after less than a minute of idleing and is then very hard to restart.

If the injector pump is not firing the injectors, than the FSS (fuel shut-off solenoid) could be at fault. As others have already said......

What brand of glow plugs are they? If they are not BERU brand than extreme caution should be taken when removing them. If a tip breaks off, very bad things can happen.

One dead GP will cause a misfire for the first few seconds after startp, but two could be enough to make starting difficult.

I'm not completely sure, so some one please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the 87 and up glow plug controller shut off if two or more glow plugs are dead?

Two or more not working will cause a very short wait to start cycle. May not cycle at all.
