well im 19 and ive had my first diesel for a little over 2 months and lately its been starting hard.i would have crank it alot and tuesday night i got off work and it turned over twice and started and the next morning it did it again. but when i got to my grandpas and was ready to leave it wouldnt start for nothing when i got home from work it fired right up. any body know what this could be.
I am having almost this exact same problem on my 84. So I am also interested in what could cause this.
Have you verified that your glow plugs are working as per my earlier post?
If they check out, than its time to check for fuel starvation.
While cranking, pop the schrader at the fuel filter head to see if fuel is comming out. You can do this test by yourself if you pop the valve quickly after you stop cranking. An alternative test to cranking is to take the filter assembly off and see if the filter is full of fuel. It should actually spill a little when you take it off.
If that checks out, than crack the torque on one of the injecor lines and crank the engine over to see if fuel is squirting out at the connector. (keep clear of the connector).
If the fuel filter is not full, than you have an air leak in the fuel system and fuel is draining back to the fuel tank upon shut down. The typical symptom is the engine fires up well when hot, but dies after less than a minute of idleing and is then very hard to restart.
If the injector pump is not firing the injectors, than the FSS (fuel shut-off solenoid) could be at fault. As others have already said......
i did test my glow plugs and 2 of them are bad would that fix it or is it something else also
What brand of glow plugs are they? If they are not BERU brand than extreme caution should be taken when removing them. If a tip breaks off, very bad things can happen.
One dead GP will cause a misfire for the first few seconds after startp, but two could be enough to make starting difficult.
I'm not completely sure, so some one please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the 87 and up glow plug controller shut off if two or more glow plugs are dead?
i havent takin them out yet and i have no idea what brand they are but ill let them soak with pb blaster for an hour before i even try to take them out

Two or more not working will cause a very short wait to start cycle. May not cycle at all.
