Auto trans identification

OK, noob question; how do you know which transmission you have? (Other than the obvious "automatic" of course; even I can get that one).

Need the year and make. Sometimes there is still a tag on the side of the trans. which will help.

Check out: Ford Door Sticker Decoder

T = Four-speed automatic (4R44E).
D = Five-speed automatic (5R55E).
M = Five-speed manual (M5R1).
H = Single speed (electric).

Technically, all the Automatics are derived from the A4LD, which is derived from an even earlier 3 speed. Over the years the trans has evolved to become more refined and increasingly electronic. The early versions used hydraulic governors, and vacuum modulators to regulate the shifting, with later adaptations for computer controlled OD engagement and TC lockup. The 4R44E has a fully electronic control. The computer decides when to shift each gear based upon speed, load, and throttle position. The 5R55E is the same, except it engages OD on top of 1st gear to create a gear split between 1st and second, an extra speed basically.

The codes listed by Rockledge are right on. Use that to determine which trans you actually have.

All the electronic trannies share a weakness that has to do with the shift strategy. Basically, they are designed to slip a little each time the shift in a effort to make the shifts smoother. This wears them out faster, and produces more heat. Shift kits to firm up the shifts correct the problem and make the trannies last much longer and they can handle more stress. The solenoids on some years also have problems. I don't have the link, but there are outfits that redo the valve bodies to increase the fluid pressures and strengthen the tranny.

Despite the weaknesses, if the fluid is replaced with new fluid every 30,000 miles, most failures could be avoided.
