I recently had a front wheel bearing go out (got 195000 out of the originals) and noticed when it was apart that the stub shaft where the little needle bearing rides has a groove wore in it as wide as the needle bearings and when everything is together there is slop in my axle shaft there. Welding shop says you cant weld it up and turn it down because its hardened and ford wants 600 bucks for a new one. Other than a junk yard, where could I find a good shaft. Its an early 99 F350 4x4 SRW. Anyone else ever had this problem? If so what did you do?
I had to replace one a couple years ago, go to car-part.com. You can search for the part you need and it has the inter-change for all the model years they fit. My axle shaft ran 250.00 including shipped to my door. You can also check with a driveline shop to see if they can fit a carrier bearing on it.
Part Number : 4C3Z-3B387-AA
Outer stub shaft.
Part Number: C6TZ-3123A
Needle Bearing Replacement
Both of these are ford parts numbers. This is not the $600 shaft, this is just the outer stub shaft, and it is around $120. The needle bearing I paid about $14 for.
