I have a 2001 Expedition that did not come with the CD Changer. I now have the Ford Original equipment CD Changer unit. My question is, is the harness connector for the changer already wired into the vehicle and is it hidden under the console? Has anyone tried to install this.
I have not tried to do this install, but when I removed the factory ford Tape deck and CD changer out of our 2001 EXPY there were three plugs in the back of the deck. 1 for the player, 1 for the rear audio controls, and 1 for the changer. since it is simple to pull the deck out, maybe you could do that first and look to see if the harness is attached to the deck. That way you would know if the harness is attached at all.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Jun-02 AT 01:05 PM (EST)]Thanks Murph, I will start there. You say it is simple, I have not even looked at it considering taking the deck out, but it would be a surprise if it was actually simple..Any tricks or anything to look for when taking out the deck?
The wiring harness for the changer is not included if you don't get a factory equipped changer. The wiring harness you need plugs into the back of the radio and then you run the harness under the center console to the compartment. There are several harnesses that will work, but be aware that if you get the wrong one you could lose the speed sensitive volume functionality. I believe the harness you would need is part number XU3F-14588-AB.
Taking the radio out takes all of 30 seconds, provided you have the DIN tool (Walmart has them for around $3).
As for the three plugs in the back of the radio, only 2 of them are used in a standard system. The third plug is used for the Mach system components.

This is kind of an old thread, but its the only one I can find related to what I'm doing.
I would like to add a CD changer to my 2000 Expedition. It didn't come with one, but there are several for sale at my local salvage yard.
I removed the center console and there are 2 connectors under there one male and one female. They aren't attached to anything.
I also removed the stereo and there are 2 connectors into the back of it. So I assume the wiring harness for the CD Changer is installed?? The problem is that the colors of these wires don't match the colors in the wiring diagram provided by Chilton's.
