I have not looked at an '01, but it should use the same keys as earlier years I believe. If you look at the front of the radio, do you see 2 holes on each side of the radio?
If you do, get some hex keys, 4 pieces of a coat hanger, etc. and push into the holes. Now push the keys inward toward the face releasing the catches and pull the radio out at the same time. Should slide out...
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-May-02 AT 03:55 PM (EST)]Thanks. I have keys for a Saab factory radio that look like they fit, but was unsure if they would work. I thought they (keys) might get stuck in the holes. Thanks again.
NO COATHANGERS! i broke my damn factory radio with those things, you will just make it more difficult to get out if you use hangers it will break the latches that hold the cd player in and make them stick, they things are tricky to get out, take it to your nearest audio store and they will get it out in 5 secs with no charge, sure beats 2 hours of TRYING to get it out
No kidding. I have some SAAB removal keys, so I thought I'd try them. Well after about 25 min. it finally came out, boy was that rough. Thanks for the input.
I have installed a cd player in my 94 F-150 and I borrowed a set of ford removal tools to remove it they look like horseshoes with a ball on the end, on the factory system there will be four square holes in each corner, just insert the removal tools and pull the old one out.
If it is the first time you have taken the radio out, than I recommend the keys. A coathanger is a daily household item that can be used, but they can be tricky. I have taken out over 100 factory radios, and can have one out and unplugged in 30 seconds. I guess it is a little easier when you do it so much...
Autozone sells the tool required to remove the stereo. You can make something to work, but for $2.99 you can buy the correct tool with nice rounded ball ends that don't screw anything up.
