I was under the truck hooking up my trans temp gauge sender and noticed a light coating of oil on the trans oil pan. There were even some bolt heads with fluid "hanging" off them - not quite enough to drip - yet. Is this an indication of failure to come? (I hope not - have about a 500 mile trip planned for next week) I am uncertain of the last fluid change as I bought it from Ford at 89k - now I am at 96k - I figured I would be able to service it at 20k intervals. I was also under the impression that everything was serviced from Ford when I purchased the truck. I did some searching and found some info about trans failures - but nothing that applies. Not to add confusion, but I did notice a whine after switching my 6637 intake to an AFE Stage II - Only when it warms up well and I'm on the gas. I thought it was the turbo noises...I hope its turbo anyhow. Any suggestions? Ideas? Help?!
I have a friend that drives an f250 diesel. He also had oil leak under the truck, coating the tranny, and everything behind. It ended up being tiny rust holes in his oil pan.(very interesting, because he didn't seem to have that much rust under his truck) Ended up being an expensive fix, had to pull the engine to change oil pan.
Why the story? First verify that it is indeed tranny fluid or engine oil, (It is amazing how the oil seems to spread all over the place.) and then you can trace to the problem area.
my brother in-law had a 2000 f350 diesel with the same issue, was the oil pan, and was VERY expensive, i would do a search in the superduty forums, or even post a thread there, i think its a common diesel issue....

Didnt get a chance to check it yesterday. But - oil pan? And expensive? how so? I'll do a search in the superduty area...
Hmmm...I now recall a thread about a nut coming loose on the engine's oil pan dipstick or something. You gotta drop the pan (it only can come down about an inch or so) to tighten it. It can be the cause of the oil film. He claimed many of his friends' 7.3L had the same issue.
