topping off freon

hi guys,
i got a 2005 f150 (5.4L) i would like to check/top off the freon. I got two fill valves, one near the radiator and one near the firewall. one is also thicker than the other. i know one has to be the suction side. does anyone know which is which? or where i can find this info?

thanks for your help.

The smaller charge port is the one you want to use. It should have a blue cap on it, but it might just be black as well.

Go to your local parts store and grab a can of R134A with the charge hose and gauge attached.

Is there a specific reason why you want to top it off?

When you get the can and "fill hose" The hose will have a quick disconnect plug on the end. It can only connect to the low pressure port on the system.

You really need to get a gage to measure the high pressure side though.

If you think you have a leak get some R-134a with a leak detection dye etc...

Cheers,

Rick

topping off

the air doesn't seem to get that cold anymore, and it seems to take longer to cool the truck down than it use to. i was going to go to the auto parts store and get the freon with the guage built onto the tank, and just check if i might be low. i have done it before on older cars but i couldn't remmember which side of the hose was which.

thanks again for the info

How do you know it needs topped off?
Freon isn't "used up" over time.
10% too much freon cools worse than when it is 50% low.

top off

i don't know for sure it needs to be topped off. i just figured with the symptoms i described it might need some. if you think it might cause more harm than good to top it off, maybe i will just leave it alone. i'm sure if i had a leak being that it is a 2005 i would of lost all thee freon by now.

thanks for the info.
