For years I have been taking my 98 ranger to the station to top it off - (I have a slow leak). I have just been told that this is something I can do myself but I do not know how. Are there any sites or does anybody know where I can get information how how to do this. (I am assuming my ranger uses the new freon.)
I have used the cans that come with a little hose and valve attached to them, available at any auto parts store, its pretty easy takes me 10-15 min, follow the instructions, maybe get a haynes manual too so you know where everthing is. Make sure you understand what you are doing, wear safety glasses and use reasonable caution. On mine the low side valve is near the accumulator close to the firewall on the passenger side.
It's not hard to do... the hard part is knowing when to stop adding freon. If you decide to do it yourself, hook it up, start the engine A/c on high...
Keep your hand on the accumulator itself (the "canister" looking thing near the low side fill port)... as you add freon you'll feel it getting colder and colder.
If you feel it stop getting colder close the valve on the hose to stop adding freon and that should work. If you add too much your air will actually blow warm, just like if you don't have enough.
The proper way to do it is with an evacuation machine and gauges, but most people don't have that equipment at their disposal.
