Have 2001 expy XLT 5.4 engine. Autozone says error code is P1401 emissions. It didn't sound right so I told Haitian man please test again. Same result and he couldn't get check engine light to turn off. What's up with that? Dealer also scanned vehicle later that day and says bad coil packs on #4 & #6 cylinders. Car idles rough and poor acceleration. Service Engine light on constantly. Have 84,000 miles on vehicle. I'm thinking I'll replace plugs and at least two of the coil packs/cops whatever thingy. Advice welcome. Where would you purchase the coil pack/cops gizmos? What kind of plugs recommend you?
Thanks for advice. Problem fixed. Went to Napa and picked up two boxes of Belden Max Coil on Plug Boots. Napa part #702418 (4 to a box). I think that they were about $22/box. At the same time I picked up new spark plugs, gapped and replaced them also (Autolite AP764). I had replaced the plugs about a year ago but I figured that I might as well do them while I have everything apart. The COPS from Napa have the new boots and replacement springs. Remember to purchase anti-seize lube for the plugs and dielectric gel for the COPS.
I started the repair today at about Noon and finished at five O'clock. Along with the repair I cleaned the throttle body and changed the engine oil and filter. It's probably a three to four hour repair if you have all of the tools on hand. Cylinders one through six were fairly easy. Seven and eight were a little tricky. If you attempt this repair make sure you have a swivel rachet and several different size extensions for your 5/8 spark plug socket. You'll also need a 7mm socket for the COPS and a 7mm wrench for the number 7 cylinder (Fuel rail in the way). I spent a lot of time hunting for tools in the garage. Good Luck!
