my 74 f-100 currently has a 351w good engine that i will run until i finish the 460 swap engine project. the problem im having with the carb on the 351 is when i accelerate it cuts out kinda like its not taking gas until it does this until it get moving then stops but at the next light it will do it alll over again its the factory 2 barrel.someone has said the accelerator pump might be bad any help from you blue oval guy would be thanxful
That's what it sounds like to me. Look down the carb with the engine off and work the throttle. As you open it, you should see 2 streams of gas shoot down into the venturis from high up on the carb. No gas- probably bad accerlerator pump. Weak or bad fuel pump and /or clogged fuel filters are another possibility.
thanx for the help ,yesterday i failed me ,the wife and i were on our way too decatur the next town over from hartselle were i live.about 10 miles down the road it did a couple miss and skips and then just died so coasted to a fire station sit there for a moment and started right up but soon as we got on the highway it bogged out again did the same thing coasted to the side of the road stared it again and turned around and went back home ,i have anew accelerator pump ill try and also dont cost anything to check the fuel filter if either of those dont fix it ill try a fuel pumpTHANX AGAIN DOUG1222556
From what you are describing now, it sounds more like a fuel delivery problem and more likely a clogged filter, (or possibly a bad fuel pump). My thinking is this- going down the road, it runs out of gas- (clogged filter won't flow enough to keep up) sitting the fuel bowls in the carb fill back up from the pressurized trickle of gas allowing you to restart the motor which runs untill the bowls run dry because the truck is using more fuel than the clogged filter can pass. Check the filter between the pump and the carb and make sure no lines are kinked or bad rubber. Hopefully, it is not a clog in the tank filter.
I agree with Doug. I had your exact symptoms some years ago (of course at night, on the highway and a hundred miles from home).
My old gas tank was pretty rusty I guess and I had to change the little filter in the carburettor regularly. Finally I got an early fuel pump with the filter can under it and have had no problems since. These canister filters can hold a lot of dirt without clogging, and are easy to dump out on the side of the road in an emergency.
