I need some motor advice

hey so im puting a new motor into my 69 f100 and i was going to put a 460 in it but ive been reading a little more and read that a 460 is more of a towing engine and puting a 390 back into the truck will be a little cheaper and i'll be able to put more money into ether stuff then. which i would love to do but the only thing i have a 360 that i can take into the motor place and they'll give me a core charge for a 360 but i really dont want a 360 i would rather get a 390. my question is should i get a 360 but pute the 390 crank and rods in it or do you guys prefer a 390 still over a 360 with 390 bottom end. i'am in for any suggestion. thanks in advance, Tyger.

A 460 would be a great motor. But if you have the 360 then put the 390 crank and rods in it. use the 360 pistons, and you have a 9.5-1 comp ratio this will be a powerful upgrade. with the right carb you could get decent milage too.

Rebuilding your 360 into a 390 is probably cheaper than the 460 swap. Now of course if you have to get the crank and rods, maybe pistons too, you should check into an even longer stroker to get you more cubes.

Check the FE forums and read anything that says 390 or 360.

Headers, dual exhaust with cross over (H Pipe), intake (see the forums for best street job) 600 cfm 4bbl, RV type cam, standard head work, and either the 390 crank or a 400+ CI stroker, with a CR of 9.5:1 or so, will make an unbelieveable amount of power compared to the 360, using about the same amount of gas. You should have a nice torque spread as well.

Plus, all you accessories bolt up, and your trans will bolt up if you are keeping whatever you have. And, 100 or so fewer lbs on the front end.

Note using the 390 crank and rods and 360 pistons makes about 9.5. But, remember, you're not going to use your worn out 360 pistons, you will be buying pistons, so consider this when doing the bang for the buck analysis.

360 and 390 share the same 4.05 bore block. All you really need to get is a 390 crank, short rods and pistons. Natch any machine work the block might need depending on condition.

Check here, looks like you can get the 3.98 stroke which gives you a 410 or probably a 414 with a .030 bore. Or up to 4.125 stroke

www.ScatCrankshafts.com

FE KITS

Depends on your budget, not free you know...

Finding a molding 390 with a good crank starts to look good....

As others have stated, using the 360 pistons with the 390 crank and rods will put your compression ratio somewhere around 9.5 to 1....and you can reach 10 to 1 with that combo depending on the head cc's and head gasket you use. Unfortunately, you will most likely have to change pistons. The 360 doesn't go as far up the cylinder wall so the wear will be lower....if the cylinder wear isn't noticable (unlikely) then you might get by with just a cylinder hone and reuse the pistons. You're most likely going to have to bore it though and then you'll need new pistons....get ones for a 360 and you'll be in good shape. Since you've got to purchase the 390 crank and rods (and pistons) anyway, then listen to 85e150...there's some decent deals out there for stroker cranks....I'd call survival motorsports...Barry specializes in FE's. You can get a 4.25 stroke crank at a good cost....and then upgrade the cam, heads, intake, etc....the sky and your pocketbook is the limit....LOL.

Good Luck!

Tracy
