[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Sep-02 AT 09:12 PM (EST)]Does anyone have any info on the stock premium sound system? I have a SD Lariat with the premium 6 CD changer and was wondering what kind of power it put out. I can't find any info in the manual or on searches of this site.
Does that unit have enough poop to run some aftermarket 2- ways or am I pissing in the wind without an amp? Or does this thing have an amp and how much does it put out?
From what I have found (edmunds.com) the "premium" system in the Superduties 2001 and up only has 80 watts. The curious thing is that the option with 6CD changer says premium system with amplifier. I only suspect that it has no more power that the premium system w/o the 6 cd changer. If you search the topic in this forum and the superduty forum you can find topics that cover mods done by other guys and for the most part they install new components. The premium system in the superduty is no where near the quality or output of the systems in the EB Expeditons or Explorers. Too bad. Please post any facts you dig up regarding the stock output.
Just got off the phone with a authorized Visteon dealer and they knew it had an internal amp and guessed it at 80 watt total power. 20w per speaker is pretty weak and wouldn't be worth just swapping speakers without and amp to power them up. Bummer.
My '01 SD has the 6CD premium system and it has no amp
as you have found out. Only the RPO Mach audio systems like in the
Expedition (and possibly the Excursion) have an additional
amp.
From past car audio knowledge, and what I see in this forum,
you should *****-can the stock H/U (head unit) and speakers
and upgrade them all to get a really nice sound. You may
not need to add an amp/crossover/etc. to get a great
sound (unless you want a subwoofer or 2, then the amp is a
must), but your budget can dictate that.
Search the archives here for some ideas. I have seen recent
posts about Sony, Eclipse, Pioneer and other H/U's that
all seem to beat the stock 6CD units we have.
Good luck w/ whatever you choose. Let us know how it sounds
and take some pix to show us after you install it all.
