Exclamation Oil Leaking

Hello everyone,
Impac here, I have a 1996 E-350 powerstroke that is leaking oil from the rear of the engine and I cannot find the source. I have taken off the air intake and the doghouse but I still cannot see where it is leaking from. I took her to a shop and they took of the flywheel cover and notice about 3 quarts of oil sitting in the pan. He thinks it is my engine cover gasket, which I have no idea what the hell that is. I did check the oil line to my turbo and it was fine. I did see oil in between the "V" around the fuel pump and I am wondering if that could the problem. Can someone help me with this. Thanks for your help. "Powerstroke for Life!!"

It might be the rear main seal?

3 quarts of oil in the flywheel cover?????

If you have oil in the valley you should start by cleaning the valley with some degreaser and some water from the hose, not pressure washer. You may want to do the back of engine as best as possible and the pan. Get the valley clean and get in ther with a flashlight and a small mirror. You can remove the y-pipe to help quite a bit. You should find your leak then. A clean motor is easiest to find leaks on.

No it is not the rear main seal either. The seal is dry so are the valve cover. I am baffled on this one. It looks as if someone has turned on a faucet on the passenger side of my engine.

Do you think it is coming from around my fuel pump?? I did have this replaced last year and it sits in that general location. But I did not see any oil leaking from around it.

I had the same problem. Nobody could find it, including two shops. Took it to Midway Ford here in KC (they specialize in trucks but they cost big $$$).
Mine was the oil galley plug.

Look at the valve cover and make your way toward the valley. The galley is built into the head and has a big plug on the end of it at the rear / firewall side of the engine. Easy to replace, hard to diagnose.

Ford steams the engine and then checks it.

I had similar problem with oil in the valley and leaking out hole in the back of the valley and my problem was the two little orings where the oil is pumped into the turbo. They can leak a little and leak alot. Mine only leaked while it was running and dripped for awhile after it was turned off. I hope this helped!!!

I just finished inspecting the the valley and searched for the oil galley plug and noticed that the oil is flowing from the front of the valley. Any suggestions on this possibility?

You're getting warmer, keep looking. The high pressure oil pump or HPOP sits right at the front of the valley, probably coming from one of the fittings or seals.

Yep lots of oil leak possibilities. Clean up the valley with brake cleaner get everything good and dry. Get an inspection mirror and a strong flashlight. start the engine and begin tracing the oil drips.

Where does the hpop sit? Is it this gold looking square that sit right behind my air filter? On the left side of it there is a solenoid that has a plug attached to it. Could this be it bolted to the front of my engine just above my water pump?

Yes the HPOP is at the front of the engine jsut above WP height but on the back side of the timing cover down in the valley. Just in front of the fuel filter housing under all the hoses and wiring. In this picture where the "IPR" text box is, is the HPOP.

So I can assume that it is in the same location on an E-350 van correct?

Thanks fella's!!! I had to replace the o-rings on the HPOP and replace the mounting gasket. She is running like a bat out of hell now!! My buddy just bought a 98 E-350 4x4 Quigley set-up and we were surprised to find that it has twin turbos and is putting out 520hp @ 2400rpm!! She is also giving him 780ft-lbs of torque @ 2100rpm!! Is this all possible? It is a 7.3 engine with a 5inch exhaust, but I never heard of these number from a E-350! Help me out fellas he made me jealous and I want to smoke my tires too!! LOL!!
