Thermal Bypass on Trans.

I know this has probably been covered a million times, but I couldn't find a definite answer in the "search", I found a place selling the tru-cool trans coolers (4739 Max) and they have two options, one with an external thermal bypass, and the other says for warm climates (not me), with NO thermal bypass, From what I understand the trans. on these '99 and newer rigs with the 4R100, have that kind of bypass already built in to the trans. so I would NOT need another external one. Is that right? Just tryin' to make sure weather or not it's needed. Talk to y'all later...

Get the one with "NO" thermal bypass, as the transmission has one already. It is in the line that connects between the fluid inlet and outlet ports on the right side of the transmission.

O.K. that's what I thought, that'll save some $, they've got it down to $110 w/o the thermal bypass valve! Talk to y'all later...

The 4R100 does not have a thermal bypass. It has a pressure bypass. It is designed to bypass the cooler if the cooler plugs. It can plug from debris, or from REALLY cold ATF. Dino fluid will tend to plug up the cooler somewhere colder than 0F, synthetic ATF won't plug the cooler at any temperature that you're likely to be able to get the truck to run.

I'd install a cooler WITH a thermal bypass.

O.K. so it says it comes with a "remote" external bypass, where should that be mounted then? Close to the trans. or ???.

I guess I read too much into the fact of the bypass line redirecting the thicker, cold fluid thru it. Its main purpose would be a failsafe device in the event of a plugged trans cooler. I was thinking, like others, that it was an aid to warm up the fluid in colder temps. Glad you brought up this point.

Thanks, Mark. I misunderstood the bypass line function on the tranny too.

I don't think it matters, as long as it is in the line from the trans to the first cooler. Mount it where it's convenient.

O.K. Mark, I totaly believe what you're saying. However, I stumbled acrost this site... Tru-Cool 4739 MAX with the opposite info. (about 1/2 way down the page) I would think that they MUST be misinformed also about the factory trans. pressure valve. or am I missing something? Any thoughts?

If it were my money I'd listen to Mark and get the external cooler. He gives out a lot of good information, and I'd trust him over some website that sells products for numerous applications. In case you missed it take a look at his signature.

No, I've seen his credentials, like I said in my post, I totaly believe HIM, I was simply wondering if that web-site somehow knew something that I didn't, or if it was simply "cut and dry"... if the truck has a 4R100 trans. this IS HOW IT IS! Sometimes build dates of the same yr. OR different option packages will affect what one guys rig has on it vs. what another guys has. Did that make sense? I'm rereading it but it doesn't look like it's coming out right?

I've spoken with Bob Riley a couple times. Misinformed is a very kind way of putting it. He has A LOT of VERY wrong information on his website.
