hello folks. my name is jason/ 66 f100 with chevy 305 camaro motor. purchased this way. i loved the truck when i saw it, and my wife loved it before i even saw it. anyway. its needs work. body is in ruff shape. i found a guy to do the body work for me, slow but steady. i am not a rich man. just a guy who works for a living. drive a vw on the daily and the truck when i feel like it. recently been seeing smoke. coming out of a valve on the top of maninfold. i am in no means a mechanic. but would like to be able to do some work on truck. i would like to do a full tune up. cant seem to find diy anywhere. would anyone here be able to give me a little help??
LOL, welcome to the forum. As you can see you will get limited support on fixing up your 305. Now as far as fixing up the Ford part of your truck, these guys are great. Don't be offended by the negative comments, but these guys are some hard nosed ford forever lovers. Don't run off.
Typically smoke or fumes seen out of a valve cover are blowby. It may not necessarily be an issue as a PCV valve is used and theese fume fed back to be reburnt. Is there a PCV installed? if it is, then it may be bllocked. Blow by removal is necessary for healthy engine life.
thanks for reply. im pretty sure that the same place where the smoke is coming from, there is actual oil coming out. thought it may be pvc. not really sure. again, i dont know much bout these things.
to the chevy hatters, sorry fellas. i woulda liked an original or a 302 or a monster motor. but i got what i got. and i also have a daughter due in early aug. so,,, swaps are out of the question for now. again, sorry fellas.
One cover should have a vented fill cap, the other a grommet/pcv/ hose to the carb. if not make this simple fix. Sounds like your engine is building pressure and pishing out the cap.

All kidding aside, drive what you got (it came that way) at the very least there is one more 66 still on the road enjoy it later on swap it out.
I know you have a daughter on the way, and that will take all your time and money for the rest of your life. Try to put some aside for your truck, hopefully you won't need to put a lot of money into it. At least not yet.
congradulation's on your new addition.
again, thanks for reply folks. ill try and post some pics of truck soon. my plans are to, slowly but surely get the truck looking good and running great. im hoping to get the truck done sometime before my son gets his license. he is 5. so i have some time. thank god. hopefully ill get some good info to help me alon the way.
Welcome to our little world.
You have already found the huge chasm between owners of these trucks and the fat-fender 'effies' of the 40s-50s. Those guys install brand x engines in their trucks all the time (why? beats the snot out of me). It's simply not done on these much, as with all the room to fit pretty much anything in there not going Ford doesn't make much sense.
You bought it that way, though. So there's your line of defense. Get used to saying that a lot.
Sadly, whoever did that bit of stupidity certainly didn't pick a very good engine to use. A 305? Ugh. They'd have been better off with a 300 six by a mile. But, you live with what you have. I just wouldn't put a lot of money into that engine if it does have blowby issues. You can find enough SBC engines simply by putting a moistened finger up into the wind it's not worth spending money on that 305 other than to keep it reliable.
As far as a 'tune up'...I'd check the timing and make sure that is correct. Check the condition of the spark plugs and replace if necessary. They should be a light tan in color. Black soot is too rich, black gunk is oil, black wet is way too rich, pasty white is too lean/not enough fuel. Pull the distributor cap and check the condition of the contacts and the rotor for burnt looking bits.
I'd suggest we need to know much more about the engine before you go much further. Carb? What kind? What year engine? Electronic or points ignition? Stock or something like MSD? If you can get some pictures in your gallery, that would probably help.
Wow, for a second I thought this thread was gonna get ugly! For starters I might suggest finding a Chebby forum to ask yer motor questions - might be less painful for all of us. But then motors are all... ...forget it, almost said something that'll get ME in hot water. Anyhow, I agree, just keep that 305 running till you can get something else under the hood. 300's Can be found real cheap, were original to the truck, and are nearly indestructible. But they aren't great for gas mileage.
thanks for the welcome fellas. again, sorry for the chevy engine. was bought as is. couldnt tell the guy, gimme a swap. hopefully one day i will get around to swapn back to ford power. i know the day will come, just aint gonna be any time soon. i plan on doing a complete tune up to see if that help her out. not a mechanic buy any means but gonna give it a go. hopefully that stops the spittn oil issue. i want to keep this truck and one day give it to my son. just in much better shape. hes 5 and loves the truck.
