I have an 86 F350 with a Carbed 460 in it. I want to find another motor so I can start rebuilding the lower end of it and just swap all the upper stuff on my current truck. Is their anything about the blocks (year, host car / truck etc) I should be looking for? What 460's blocks would work (years etc)
the 78 and older 460's were internal balanced engines. the 79 and newer 460's were external balanced. easy way to tell is look for spacer behind the front balancer. if it has a plain round spacer, it is internally balanced, if it has what looks like a spacer with a hatchet on it, it is externally balanced.
as long as you use the flexplate that came with the engine you are rebuilding, you can use any year block for your rebuild. but to keep things simple and easy, find a 79 or newer 460 (will have D9TE casting number on block above starter), then it will be a no hassle exchange.
the early blocks (71 and older) and some 72 blocks had different deck heights, so your pushrods might not work. alll other accessories (heads, intake, dist, water pump) etc will interchange amongst all years 460's.
of course while your rebuiding your bottom end, make sure to use a timing chain set from a 70 or older 460 to get the straight up timing marks instead of the 4 deg retarded of the newer chain sets.
