okay so after reading hundreds of posts about hids i have decided to go for them. i will be heading to the boneyard tomorrow and was wondering if there is a particular donor car that i should look for or will any set of projectors/ballasts/bulbs/wiring work provided that the projectors will fit in my 05 housing? so far i have only seen it done with land rover or acura projectors. i plan to follow the same basic procedure that laxplaya has outlined in several threads. i would prefer to use an aftermarket housing but since all of them are hideous and clad with useless leds i will modify my stock ones. just looking for any last minute advice before i jump in. thanks in advance
So your going to pull the HID lamps out of a donar and put them in your housing?
I had a similar idea, but I was looking at hella's HID modules. I was thinking about getting a pair of both size lamps, use the larger one as high beam, and adjust them accordingly. Then the smaller units for driving, and keep them active when the highs are on.
I'd like to know more about how you plan attach the modules inside the stock housing. This is where I stopped working on the project.
Has anyone looked at the new , dare I say it, Jeep wrangler headlights?. They are clear and I think HID. 7" round for those Early Bronco and F series Owners.

well thats the plan. laxplaya and one other guy took projectors and fitted them in their housings and painted their stock reflectors black. it looks really cool. id like to put dual filament halogen projectors next to them to just to be 100% legal when i want to keep a low profile and use a bixenon bulb in the hid side. mounting/aiming the projectors will be quite a challenge but i hope to come up with something easy that can be passed along.
yup, myself and dan both did them. i used the range rover lights. they are bi-xenon so they do pass for legality. i tried the other way to put a low beam hid projector in the top, and a high beam halogen projector from a caddy srx in the bottom. i then needed the turn signal placed somewhere else. i decided to chuck that idea. i still have that headlight in the basement along with my stock factory 05 headlight housings for an emergency.
I don't know what kind of junk yards y'all have with those very new and exotic vehicle parts in them? Land rover hid's, srx headlights laying around the basement? wow....
I've got some spare saturn parts in my basement, probably worth in total one srx headlight.
after some more research i've decided on the acura tl bixenons. they seem to have the best rep. and yeah i went to six boneyards not one having any hids. i figured with as many dumb girls driving bmws around my town there would be some wrecked ones.
racerx7775 how did you mount the lights inside your housing. jb weld, fiberglass? or is there something you can actually bolt them to
just ordered my acura tl projectors, bulbs, ballasts, and wiring. 500 bucks on ebay not a steal but it'll be well worth it. it'll be a week before i can begin the install. i'll update this thread then.
I actually used nuts and bolts to bolt the projector to the reflector. that way i can still adjust them. I hope you have another set of lights or another car to drive in the mean time when you do the retrofit. its not like you can do it in 1 night. mine took about two weeks for the final project and that was working on them almost every night after work. the seperation of the light housings were a pain in the a**. good luck.
yeah i work 7 on 7 off so i should have plenty of time. i was hoping the oven would make it easy but maybe not?
one more question-wiring from my truck to the kit. is it a simple three wire deal. lows, highs, ground. is there a place i can order a harness from.
i made my own harness. as far as the lows and highs,,,,,, the lows are easy power on to the ballast. the highs, you will have to install a diode that keeps the lows on when the highs are activated. its not the bulb that chnges. its actually a shield that has a solenoid that moves out of the way to allow full brightness to pass through the projector. oh, the oven definately is a must. i had to put mine in at 225 for 25 minutes. it took a couple of heat times to finally get the front apart.
Hey good luck with your project. Great selection on your projectors. Take your time and feel free to ask any questions you have. HID Retrofit Parts Projectors Ballasts D2S Bulbs is also a great source of info with a ton of people who have done plenty of retros. I guarantee once you are done... you will be amazed with the quality and the quantity of light output you have. Be careful when baking your headlights. The orange reflectors on the inside can melt if they stay in too long or at too high of heat.
You will love the clean cutoff!
Hey rob, so you ended up wiring your highs using the diode? I hooked mine to the upfitter out of laziness. Although I am pretty happy with them. Where did you place the diode? Thanks

No its not just three wires. You should def protect that setup with relays and fuses. I found a guy on ebay who was selling harnesses. You would need to tell him exactly what you are trying to do. You can def make one yourself, however I didn't feel like it. Like Rob said, the Bi-xenon is a single filament bulb... however there is a shield that moves up and down to allow or block light for your high and low. The problem is with the stock setup, when we would put on highs, the power for the low goes off. We need the power to stay on, and an additional power to move the shield if that makes any sense. That is where the diode comes into play.
