2.3 block differences?

I have an '89 Ranger 2.3 4 cylinder. Are there many if any differences in short blocks? I have access to a few free used engines, mostly from '79-up Mustangs (so I'm told). I want to grab one and rebuild it for my '89 Ranger. Any history on short block changes over the years?

Thanks,

Check out The Ranger Station - Your Ultimate Ranger Resource they have a section on the 2.3 blocks and the differences between years. I haven't read up on them in months, but I thik the blocks are pretty much all the same with only minor differences. but check them out just to be safe.

?89? DIS, right? Dual plug? you'll have to look for a ?88? or later block. Cam/crank sensor, dizzy hole, ?balancer shaft-its in a 96?. if you have to go to a different block, try a 83-(86 for Mustang-88 for T-bird) Turbo EFI 2.3L, get 5.0 power when you stomp on it, 2.3l economy when you don't.

Too bad PAs soo far away, looking @ 86 2.3l stang, 2bbl, EECIII/4spd OD, can't hardly beat $200 and it runs and drives well.
