Guys, through a friend of a friend of a friend kinda thing, I can get a brand new GTP38r for just under $1200 plus shipping, so maybe $1250 all together. Then another what, $400 for bellowed up pipes from Black Widow Diesel?
Is that a good deal I should jump on? (if I could scrape up the cash)
Also, with my sticks, what size turbine housing would be better for me? I could use some edjumacation on "drive pressure" and what it does, effects.
I would think those injectors would drive it nicely with a 1.0 exh housing. The 1.15 is kinda big and is great for the top end, but you lose the bottom end resoponse (bigger housing is slower to spool). But like Ron said, you need a lot of other parts to make it into a late 99 top end before you can put it on.
But like others have said, you will need the full conversion kit to run the 38r in your truck. You would be money ahead to get the D-66 rather then the 38r...
I'm just curious to see if he could get me a good price on one of those turbos. I've been dealing with him for a good while so he gets me good prices and has always treated me good.
He called back, he said their not available for a little while. Something about updating, they were having issues. They'll be ready late june and he said he'd give me a call later today with a price.
Drive pressure will raise the EGTs as it rises. It is almost like a self licking ice cream cone. The higher the drive pressure, the higher the EGTs and it goes quickly, almost a compounding effect. Conversely, this higher drive pressure means efficiency is down lower and it spools quickly. It runs out of total potential up top and in a hurry.
I have the 1.15 housing and it can be laggy if I do not watch it or get caught in the wrong gear situation. I really hope to someday install the 1.0 housing for a comparison, but I am too busy and the truck is making good power right now. Someday.
Who's "Dammit"??? I thought about buying it myself, but if I go with his, plus add an ATS housing (he already sold that seperately), I'm looking at sinking about $1k into a van turbo. If I *needed* another turbo, I'd do it, but since I'm in no hurry, I'll build up my own when I get back. One of those things where I'd rather "roll my own" for the experience of doing it (like Brandon did).
