We have a 1950 f6. The engine was a 254, and the bearings gave out. I've located a 48 226. I haven't picked the engine up yet, but is complete with
clutch and trans. By the way, it from a 48 f1. Will I be able to use the clutch or will I need to use the one from the f6, and whats the difference? The f6, is only used as a winch/boom truck for pulling tree's over and lifting logs. Are the splines the same, or different? Bob
The F-1 would have used a 10" clutch and the F-6 would use an 11" clutch. I don't know if you can use a 254 flywheel on a 226. The 10" clutch disc is a 10-spline. That's about all I know about it, good luck!
Thanks alot, didn't know that. There's alot I don't know about old Fords. But it's looking like I might be learning. I'm just trying to learn what all I'm going to run into along the way of switching these engines. From what I've heard is they are basically the same except the insides. So, the rear of the crankshaft could be different. As far a bolting up the flywheels. So if I knew if the splines were the same (10), I might be able to use the f1 clutch. Or, I might be able to machine the flywheel from the 226, and use the 11" clutch from the f6. Does anyone know where I could buy a clutch set-up at? Might go new since having it apart. Anybody else ever done one of these swaps?
Thank-you all for any help in advance. Bob
You might be able to give Hot Rods Classic Truck Parts a call. They have a catalog you can down load too. I've had very good luck with them and they are real nice people to deal with. Hope this helps. Welcome to Rodney's Classic Trucks Parts
bob you probably ought to have the flywheel on the 226 resurface and use your clutch and tranny . the tranny with it is a little 3 speed i beleive although it is synchronized . they at parts houses , have a little plastic gizmo thats been around for some time you use to align the clutch etc. while putting it together , so all you gotta do is line the tranny output shaft up with the " splines " instead of wrestking the whole thing a lil at a time . later kevin .
I think I have one of those. Got it for my old GMC, not sure if its the same.
I can remember years ago you could buy a bag of wooden ones that had several different sizes, for almost nothing. Wish I would have bought the bag,
back then. I tried hooking up a buddy trans without one and it was a real pain.
I'll have to see what kinda shape their in. Sometimes the clutch plates are busted up.
i havent gathered all the peices for my tranny swap yet , i.e. speedomter cable and a couple other lil trinkets to go , but i am and have always looked at it this way . resurfacing the flywheel and a new clutch , throwout bearing and pressure plate are cheap insurance and a garauntee i dont have to take the d-mn thing back apart because i was too cheap !!!!!! done that to myself to many times and the kids and g-kids and wife and neighbours have heard words they've never heard before .
Exactly, thats how I feel also. I found some outfit on e-bay that I think has these clutch kits. I'm gonna ask them and see do they have one for this truck. Do you think the 11" clutch will fit up to the 226 flywheel? Better wait and see. I would think a 10" clutch would work on the winch truck. One inch isn't that much. It doesn't like get super heavy duty work outs.
I'm lucky, where the motor work will be happening is out in the country. So
nobody to hear the cursing. Bob
I would just go to NAPA. If it isn't in your local warehouse they get it in a day or so. Quality is above average and with the "Long-type" clutches they need to be rebuilt properly or you'll be fighting chatter from Day One. Not much difference in price, either.
Oreilly's and Autozone caused our NAPA store to close out, along with 2 other locally owned parts stores. But, I know where one is about 25 miles away. It seems many say they get alot of parts through NAPA, for the older stuff.
Thanks for the help, Bob!!
