Differential Change Question

I am new to this forum and need some advice. I have a 1994 F250, 7.3 with 123,000 miles on it. It has a 4.10 rear end I am considering changing it to a 3.55. Why? Fuel economy. It is a daily driver and I tow our three horse aluminum trailer about 12 times a year. No more than 200 miles round trip. Is this a good idea? What do I need to know to get this done. I know I have the 10.25 ring and pinion. Thanks in advance for your input.

The thought is good but the math won't work out very well for you. If you have a 4wd it gets even worse. A gear change could run you from $500-$2500 depending on where you get parts and who does the work (yourself or a shop). And the mileage gains may be minimal especially towing. And if you are only driving 2400 miles a year you will save little to no money.

I would keep the 4.10's

i think if its a daily driver and you tow that little it would be worth it but i would consider a compleet axle swap from a junk yard rather than a gear swap, will probably be cheeper, or a 500 dollar beater econo car

It is a daily driver. I was also considering the axle swap. I will look around and see what I can find. Thanks for your reply.

I got my gears changed from 4:10 to 3:55 right after I bought my truck a couple months ago. I couldn't stand driving it with the 4:10s and having to drive 55 to keep the RPMs under 2000. Now I can do 70 under 2000 and the engine is much quieter. Cost $1700 to get both axles done. Could buy a lot of diesel for that but cruising down the road is much more comfortable now.
