Intercooler Questions

Just wanted to make sure Im not leaving out anything. If i wanted to install a intercooler on my 97 stroke. I would need cooler, piping, 99 model y pipe, new clamp for y pipe to turbo, two 2-2 3/8 tubes with clamps. Plus i would have to make my own mounting brackets for the intercooler. Am I leaving anything out? Does anyone have an pics or write up on the step by step from when you did it? Thanks for any info, Steve

TJBeggs does have pics but he got his pipes from banks.
I am in the midst of doing this mod and I have purchased the intake spyder and the IC w/ hoses.

BTW what are the two 2 3/8 tubes for? Or are those the tubes to and from the tranny?

I am looking forward to the intake heater. I will be putting that on a relay switch.

The couplers are 2" to 2 3/8" to connect the y pipe (spyder) to the intakes

Yes I know it feels overwhelming while looking at it. I have to collect the mig welder and other parts.
I wish I could get a parts list from Rubber Duck or someone.
How 'bout it duck?

So far I have:
-Intake Spyder from a SD
-intercooler from SD with pipes

I will need:
-general steering bushings from parts store (Size of bolts???)
-a piece of flat 1/4" stock? for mounting bracket
-spray paint
-two exhaust pipe elbows (What sizes?) I don't have the IC pipes in my possession yet.
- another piece of exhaust pipe for the Driver's side IC pipe (How long?)
- Connector tubes for spyder to intake 2"-23/8"
- Hood latch support (Do I need a new one or was that blue one in your pics, something you fabbed up? I didn't really understand what you did with that? Have to look.

That should be all or what?
Like Ace said I am trying to get it all together before I start. I don't have a back up vehicle and I like more parts that I can return later than not enough.

Thanks,
Fletch

You will need the y-pipe from an Early 99. There is an early 99 and late 99. The late won't work for us. Also I don't believe the late has an intake heater. You also need the 2" to 2 3/8" couplers to attach the heads as well as clamps. Also the marmon clamp that goes at the turbo to y connection. This is different from our stocker since the flange is thicker on the y-pipe.

You will also need the IC and a set of SD steel pipes (there are also aluminum ones but unless you can weld aluminum you want the steel ones). Then also will need one piece of 3 inch pipe about 4 or 5 inches long and a few 3 inch mandrel bends. I just used a second SD driver side pipe. Then some pieces of steel for mounting the cooler.

Here is my thread on the install
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...installed.html

Article I based my install on
Tims I/C Page example

The only difference is that I found a used banks y-pipe for $50 so I didn't use the early 99 y-pipe

Is this the early '99 spyder? It has a intake heater on it.

The guy off ebay didn't know which one it was off of.

Nope that is a late 99-03 y-pipe. The two legs going to the heads are too large and the turbo connection is different.

Here is what my parts list was:
6.0L IC
Both 6.0L charge pipes
Drivers side 7.3L pipe
2"-2 1/2" reducer hoses from Intakehose.com
Early 99 intake spyder
My pipes came with the clamps and boots but you will need them too.

I reused the original clamp where the spider clamps to the turbo but i keep trying to get a chance to run up to Ford and get the right one. It works right now and seems pretty tight but I think that is part of the reason i lost 5-6 psi of boost.

I cut and welded the three pipe to make two. The drivers side 7.3L pipe fits pretty good on the drivers side just needs 4" or so added to the top. On the passenger side one of the 6.oL pipes just need about 5" in the middle and 2 on the end. It looks pretty good and ill try to get some pics up as soon as i can. Good luck with it.

I might have for got something so if you have anymore questions just ask.
