Unhappy Unsafe steering wheel.Help please

hey fellas.
i noticed when i was climbing into my truck i can pull my steering wheel up,shaft and all and when i do this i dont have any steering. when i push it back down i have steering again.
"steering box is down by the front tire not by cab if you guys needed to know"
is it just a C clip that is missing for this?
thanks for any help
Mitch

rag joint

It's a rubber like thing, located at the end of your steering column. just before the gear box The rubber wears out/rots. You do have a 4x2 correct? 4x4's have a different configuration..

Get a helper and have him watch the steering shaft for movement while you or he pulls up on the wheel if none pull off the horn ring and watch in there or do both at the same time, finding the problem should be visual.
