I have a 99 F250 SD v10. My 4x4 is not working. Any help would be appreciated. When I turn the switch on the dash the light comes on and I can here what sounds like the transfer case engaging, but I have no power to either front wheel, whether the hubs are locked or auto.
how many miles are on your truck. your hubs may be bad. I am sure someone will correct me if i am wrong but i believe one hub is busted or unlocked then you wont have power at either wheels because all of your power will be going to the unlocked hub...
leave your truck in park then jack up one front tire of your truck. engage 4x4 and then see if you can spin your tire. if it spins then one of your hubs is bad. in my 01 one of my hubs went bad at 125000 miles. I just replaced both hubs with manual hubs so i wouldn't have to mess with the vacume lines ever again.
hope this may help finding the problem...someone else will probably chime in with a better knowledge then me.
with the switch and light on and the truck in park, try to rotate the driveline with your hand. if you can rotate it, then not even the transfer case is engaged. also try manually locking the hubs with the transfer case in 2 wheel drive. try to rotate the driveline. if it doesn't rotate, both of the hubs are locked. if it rotates, look to see which axle shaft is rotating. that is the one not engaged.
i have a 99 f250 4x4 that the 4x4 went out on. what is came out to be was the spider gears shattered. i dont know ofter this happens but that what mine did. put it in 4x4 and found the front wasnt powered. i locked it and nothing. i finally took the cover off the differential and parts of the gearing fell into my hand. just something to check.
thats what i'm thinking it is.
It doesn't seem like the hubs to me. Hopefully I'll get off my duff this week and look into it. Thanks all for the help, this is an awsome forum
Hold on there. Do the simple stuff first. Fully inspect the vacuum lines to both hubs. They are sneaky little lines that connect to the back of the hub. If you have a leak or crack or break of any kind neither hub will engage. I broke a fitting while changing an A/C hose and didn't see it until AFTER I needed the 4x4. Installed a fitting from Checker and all was fine. About $2.00.
I had the same problem. Replaced the vacum lines with Braided SS lines from Deiselsite and problem gone. Later had to replace both hubs from ford. As I had worn away the plastic from years of manualy locking hubs.
