Hell, I blame everyone in charge for our current situation, democrats, republicans(even though I am one) and especially the oil companies. I mean ,come on, they're reporting RECORD profits of what, 123 BILLION dollars or so? Every year? They say most of that is going to research, development and production. I say that's BS, but who knows, only the ones on the inside do! Ask the oil execs and the higher ups what their annual salaries are, and it will probably make you puke. The whole damn situation is disgusting. And unfortunatly, no matter who we vote for this election, will probably not make a difference
I stand corrected; vote democrat, we'll all get there in MN the dems just voted to overthrow Pawlenty's veto of the gasoline tax that just went in...
The current administration has reduced taxes on the very rich, so we're running up huge deficits. Cities and states are choking. Gasoline taxes are certainly regressive (they hurt the poor more than the rich, in general).
Conservative Republicans have always pushed for balanced budgets, and the current administration is as far removed as you can get from that concept.
When gas was a buck or two per gallon, adding a tax on gas *at that time* may have been a good idea, because it would have forced the reality of the need to conserve onto people a number of years earlier. Now, there is the reality of huge gas prices with absolutely no benefit to the government--instead, rich guys are benefiting from trading in oil futures, and the oil companies are cleaning up--while having huge tax breaks.
I don't like taxes any more than the next guy, but we seem to need things like roads, schools, police and fire departments, a military, etc....somebody is going to have to pay for these things. At this point, it's our grandchildren and their children who will inherit a huge debt....
Definitely complex, but I don't even believe it's a dem vs repub thing any more...it's just trying to balance things out, and I don't see how that is going to happen.
so then, is the oil in europe artificially high? and is the oil in venezuela artificially low (if that's even possible?)?? Europe pays 2x what we pay for gasoline, and the euro runs circles around the US dollar. Venezuela, whatever rocks they trade for gasoline, I have no idea, but I don't think their currency is a force to be reckoned with...
Gasoline has been far more expensive in europe for a long time, however they haven't had a 100 percent increase in the last year and a half.
And if you're not worried about the euro....you might wanna be. Go read up on it, the other countries that have been buying our bonds for so long....are shifting to purchasing euro based bonds.
Why is fuel cheaper in Mexico than it is here? Saw on the news where a trucking company owner outfitted a truck with an oversized fuel tank and makes weekly trips into Mexico to fill it with diesel and brings it back to fuel his fleet. He says the cost of fuel here is so high he would go out of business and purchasing fuel in Mexico is his only recourse to keep his trucks running. That is really sad, and it makes me angry that the average worker and small business owners are the ones who are being hit the worst by this.
