I've got a '93 F150 XLT 4x4 with the Dana 44 front end. I'm trying to replace the ball joints. I've hit a snag trying to remove the spindle. I removed the 5 spindle nuts, but it just seems to be frozen on there solid. I've beat and banged on it for a bit with my rubber mallet, and it's been dosed good with penetrating oil.
I called the local stores to see if they have a spindle puller tool, but nobody seems to have one. Besides trying to bang the heck out of it, does anybody have any other ideas? Heat it up?
I use a slug hammer (a big heavy one) and a few solid blocks of wood, do not hit the spindle itself with the hammer. When the wood splits, use a new piece!
1 or 2 good solid hits will drift it to one side, knock a screwdriver into the gap between the spindle and knuckle, then drift the spindle the other way. Keep shimming the gap drifting it side to side as you go until its out of the hole.
Just be sure not to hit the very end of the spindle, you will make it out of round and not be able to get the wheel bearings and or nuts back on.
Penetrating oils won't help, the spindle is a press fit in the hole.
That's what I use at work. Just attach it to a big slide hammer and they pop right off. Before I had access to one of those I used to carefully work around the edges with a chisel, but be very careful not to gouge the spindle or steering kunckle. I usually wire brush the spindle and coat it with anti sieze before installing it back on the truck.
