Anybody have any recommendations on socket/wrench combination or brand for the rear bolt on the turbo. I've got an '03 and I'm trying to remove the turbo......for about the last 3 hours. I cannot get that rear bolt to budge, if I use my 1/4" drive I can't get any leverage on it due to the impossible location of that thing and if I use my 3/8" it is too long and can't swing. I split my 1/4" drive 10mm 6pt socket trying to remove this thing and I may have started to round the corners of the bolt. My ratchets are craftsmen brand so maybe other brands have different lengths that fit better? (I doubt it).
So........I am taking a breather before I do any more damage. The only thing I can think of is using a 6 pt impact-style socket.
If you can get a impact socket on it, it will do better than a regular socket. Keep in mind that the side walls on the socket are thicker and will require more room to get on the bolt. Other than that I cant say much else since I have never had to remove my turbo.
Also, does it help if the up-pipe is out? Right now I just have it loose but it's still hanging in the way. There's so little room back there that I can't imagine it will make any difference. The HEAT suggestion sounds good too I'll definitely try that in the morning.
I almost stripped the head on mine because I started with a 12 point. Luckily the wrench was stripping out and not the bolt head... they are very hard bolts.
FELLAS- Thanks for the moral support........especially cartmanea! I worked on that darn bolt for 5 hours yesterday even trying to fabricate my own handle extensions to get more torque on it. I lost half the skin on my hands back there and was sore as hell. Late last night I sprayed the bolt with PB Blaster penetrating fluid (not easy to get to either), this morning the thing broke loose first try with a lot less effort and it came the rest of the way out by hand. I have NEVER had any kind of significant luck with any penetrating fluid before, but this was either divine intervention (I skipped church) or that stuff really worked. I don't think I would have even considered it if you guys hadn't suggested it so thanks again.......beers all around!
Glad to hear you got it loose! Now you can make your wrists and elbows sore wrestling that thing off the pedestal and oil drain tube. But don't worry, going back on is worse I was laying on my engine with a pad between my sternum and the alternator for way too long doing that turbo...
Good luck, strip the head and you have to pull the cab.
Yes am am 100% resurecting this from the dead but is this true?
I read through another link that said it is likely to need to be cut off?
The PO or his mechanic has been on that bolt and looks to have left me a doosie. My thought is that if it is bolted to the pedestal, i could grind the head off (if necessary), get the turbo out and then remove the rest of the bolt from the pedestal on the bench?
Please let me know. If i would need to pull the cab I may just stop working right now and take it in.
Definitely use a 6-point wrench or socket. Spray with a good penetrating oil the day before and let it work in. I'm not sure cutting the head off would work, since the bolt would still prevent the turbo from sliding off the pedestal (depending on if it's pre '04 or post '04).
