My transfer case will jump out of 2wd and wont go into 4H but I can pull it into 4L and it will work then shift it back to 2wd and it works fine for alittle while. It seems as though the Tcase shifter linkage needs adjusted only I cant figure out how to adjust it. I should note that the motor mounts need replaced. Could these mounts be causing the Tcase to jump out of gear?
Could these mounts be causing the Tcase to jump out of gear?\
Could be but unlikely as it would all move together as a single unit. The linkage is unadjustable but a good lube job may foot the bill. It may not be moving far enough to fully lock into place.

Thanks man, To lube it do I just put grease all over the plate the locks the shifter into place. Also there is about 3/4 on an inch of play in the shifter, Is tis normal? This is my first 4WD truck. Im learning though. Thanks in advance.

No, bolt/s loose? bushings shot?
May be froze to the pivot bolt, happens to em. Shifter may be moving via the bolt threads rather then at the bushing. If left long enough may be bad enough to explain most of if not all the 3/4" of play you're feeling but check the bushings too.
The whole thing, shifter and bracket comes off by removing one end of the link plates and IIRC two bolts going into the side of the case. (easier to get them bolts going through the shifter boot hole)
There are little plastic slider clips in the tcase itself that might be all worn out. If they are worn out then when you put it into 2wd it isnt going all the way down. Ill see if I can get you a pic of them.
EDIT
Here is a pic of the inside of the tcase. You see the little white plastic clip?

How hard is it to get these things apart? How long would it take? And can I get this piece from ford? Would I be better off getting a used tcase from the local pick and pull?
The case comes out in a about 20 min. As long as you dont have any frozen bolts ect. You have to pull the front and rear shaft, and pop the linkage off, then if you have the gear driven speedo you pull that, then there is like 5 or 6 bolts where the tcase bolts to the back of the trans, and like 2 sensors. I have a case from a 90 F350 with 20K on it. Im not using it. If your around the NJ area id be willing to part with it. Them clips can be bought from Ford and its easy to pull the back half of the tcase.

Im not in NJ area, far from it actually and Im moving to Hawaii in 1 week so I need to get this damn thing fixed. When you say the back half of the Tcase you mean split the tcase and this part is in the back half? Anyway you could throw some pics up?

back half= part of trans case that points to rearend. Cases are real easy to work on i did one bout a month ago it took like a hour to split change chain clean up and reseal
Thats all the pics I have. Just take the case out. Split the case with are all torex bolts, and change out the shift fork bushings. Its not too bad to do. Youll be a pro after it.
theres a place in new york that sells the parts pretty reasonable. and there genuine usa made. dont remember the name ust google borg worner transfer case parts
The movers come to pack all my stuff tomorrow and the Ford Dealer Parts in probaly closed today. Sucks! Well thanks all for the help. Ill tackle this job once I limp the truck to my dads house in WV. I will have a few days there. Thanks all for your help. Im gonna do it this saturday.
all of the 1356 transfer cases I have rebuilt that won't stay in 2 high had damaged range selector gears. (the gear that the fork moves with the little white plastic bushings) the gear seems to fail due to a plastic clip breaking and the fork not pushing the gear in all the way. once it starts popping out the gear is pretty damaged. don't order parts until you have it apart to see if it is pre mod or post mod range selector. (31 teeth or 38 teeth) also plan on an oil pump rebuild. and repair the case where the pump rides.
