Canzus: I notice in the Chilton manual there was a 1600 cc four in the Escort through 1985 (forgot to look if OHC, but probably).

Anyway, while in the Chilton manual I looked up the 1.9:
The 1995 1.9 four is rated 88 hp @4400 rpm and 108 lb-ft @4000 rpm. Interestingly, the same engine in 1986 put out 108 hp @5200 and 114 lb-ft @4000 with MFI. The '95 is SFI, but same figures as '95 occur in '92 with MFI. Now the 1.8 DOHC in '95 put out 127 hp@6500 and 114 lb-ft @4500.

I suspect these small fours don't have a lot of pulling power much below about 3000 or so.

The early 80's 1.6L was the same design as
the 1.9L CVH in the later ones...

Little engines require rpm to make power,
I have a couple of 2.0L EAO's that put out
over 150fwhp, but don't come up on the cam
until about 3500rpm, many years ago I had
one with a draw through turbo SWMBO used to
hunt Camaro's with, Bit of a bitch to start,
but made about 230rwhp at 6500rpm...it was
very entertaining when it came up on the cam
and boost at the same time...

Interesting. I got a used manual for the '81-'85 Escort and it shows a 2.3L pushrod four in '83-'85. Then turning to my Aerostar maunal, which starts in '86, and the 2.3 four is an overhead cam. So Ford must have had a plethora of four bangers over the years. Now a Ranger with the 2.5L pushrod four would be something to get my hands on someday. What years did the 2.5L run in Rangers?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Oct-02 AT 06:17 PM (EST)] You're right, the 2.3L and 2.5L pushrod
engines are based on the 200/250cid I6,
also known as the "HSC", IIRC there was
also a HSC "HO", and were available from
the mid 80's to the mid 90's, good little
engines, they came in the Tempo/Topaz also...

The 2.5L OHC started in '97 or '98 I think,
don't quote me on that, I may be wrong...
