proportioning valve conversion

im converting my 68 truck over to disc brakes using the 73-79 set up.the brakes are off a 74 but the proport. valve is off a 78 f150.will this work? and does it matter where on the chassis its mounted? i want to use the location of my original but this one was mounted closer to the master cyl.

Yes the 78 will work (should be same). I don't know that any specific place is required. Mine currently is above the steering gear, if I do another conversion I will mount it on the chassis rail more out of sight.

Unless the kingpins are sloppy, I leave them the hello alone and swap the complete I-beam. It is much simpler in the long run. IMHO

I have done, and been a part of several swaps. I don't want to get king pin ugly unless I have to.

King pins are as easy as a NAPA machine shop away, take you I beams to them and pick then up later with new brass busings reams and honed. Make it handle like new again thats for sure.

I have a question along the same lines- is it necessary to swap the proportioning valve out at all when converting from manual drums to manual discs, or can you simply leave the original proportioning valve, since the master cylinder will be the same?
thanks

wildwes, All drum brake systems don't have a prop. valve.

The disc brakes require a different flow rate and pressure than the rear drums so a porp. valve is needed to divide it up properly. You will have to use it with disc/drum systems.

Thanks, brakes aren't really my thing, I can reline them just fine, but the actual mechanics of the brake system aren't my thing. I usually deal more with the drivetrain.

Never heard of manual disc brakes except on really old sports cars. I wouldn't think that would work very well on a big Ford Truck. I know on my conversion from 67 F250 power drums to 76 F250 power discs I still need to change the master cylinder and prop. valve.

Well, I guess a '66 Mustang GT could be considered a "really old sportscar".
I like the manual disk brakes. They work great, but then , except for the maintenance, I am happy with the 4 wheel drum brakes on my '70 F100.
