Hello all, this will be my first post after many days of lurking. Have been searching with no available answer, and hope I posted this question in the correct thread.
I have a 2000 F250 SD, CB, V10. The temp gauge does not register, just stuck on cold. When starting the engine, there is a very slight movement with the dial going up, then go back and settle to the cold position, and stay there. I have replaced the two wire temp sensor, and was told there was another, single wire temp sensor. I have looked for quite some time now, and I am stumped. Hopefully someone who knows will chime in, with where the single wire temp sensor is.
I'd love to help, but I'm looking after my brother in Birmingham, AL who had surgery a few days ago and my service manual is back home in Lexington, KY. It will be at least a week before I can get home to check the schematics. Hopefully, you'll be able to get your answer sooner.
I looked at a wiring diagram and they show only the one sensor to the gauge
and the PCM. It's right behind the alternator. Unplug the sensor and with the key on engine off, jump the connector and the gauge should read hot. If not, the cluster is bad or the wiring to it. Hope this helps! =).
Thanks whjco, will pray for your brother on speedy recovery.
Also thanks HD1340, I believe it is one sensor for both gauges. Will check that right now. Will let you know how it goes.
According to my 2001 EVTM, the coolant temp sensor for the gauge IS the two wire one, with Red-White and a Yellow/Red wires going to it.
Check if the sensor you changed has those two wires. Just for a sanity check.
Sounds like the cluster or the wiring inbetween. Or you got a bad sensor right off the bat.
Thanks for the help you guys. Yes, the temp sensor for the f250 is the two wire sensor, and no other. I was really confused, for I was told by many, that there are two temp sensors. One will be for the temp gauge(one wire), and the other for the ecu(two wire). After two days of vigorously searching the net, I finally came to a conclusion that there is only one temp sensor for my truck. What made this fix a little difficult was my temp gauge in the cluster was bad. So what I did before even checking the gauge was, I bought a new temp sensor, which did not fix the problem. I went down to the local salvage yard and picked up a used instrument cluster. When I installed the new cluster, the temp gauge was still not working. I knew the new cluster I had just bought worked, cause they tested it in a running truck before I bought it. At this time, I had a feeling that the new temp sensor I had just purchased was a faulty one. So I got the old sensor, and plugged in the two wire connector, and voila, it worked. Took some time, with many frustrating moments, but I am glad it works again. Again, I would like to thank all that chimed in.
