Need a new temp sensor.

So I've de-computers my 1986 with a 4.9 strait 6.

But because the original temp sensor went from the computer to the sensor then the gauge it no longer works.

So far I have found the wire that when grounded will peg out the temp gauge. I have tried to manually wire in the original temp sensor but it does not work. I double checked the grounding of the circuit, everything looks perfect.

So my question is: Is there a replacement temp sensor, like maybe a single pole from a 76 that will make my gauge work?

Hoping there is someone out there that has done this conversion and solved this before I go to crazy with it lol.

Thanks

I believe that the gauges are based upon resistance. To replace the sensor you would need to get a sensor with the correct ohm (resistance) range to match the gauge (I don't know what it would be, but you could determine it with a potentiometer) which might not be the easiest thing to find (has to physically fit in addition to being a one wire sensor and the aforementioned ohm range).

Another thing you could try (which might or might not work) would be put a resistor in parallel to the sensor with the other side going to ground. Basically you would be bringing the resistance of the sensor down to the range of the gauge. The big question that this would be hitting is: does the gauge's range still correspond with the correct temp range. Without knowing the computer's interaction with the sensor/gauge it is hard to say if this would work. The spec on the resistor to use would be another question that would require some work (probably playing with a potentiometer again).

Your original sensor should work from the other engine. Your original engine had two sensors. The one with two wires went to the computer, the one with a single wire went to the gauge.

Only on the later trucks where they have a communication network did they have one sensor for both the computer and the gauge.

That is a much better answer than mine!

I actually tried the rewire the original sensor with resistance and it still would not read.

But I just got back oreillys and found that my truck has 2 temp sensors options. a single pole and dual which is the original.

I just installed the single pole, which is also the same as in a 76, and it works just fine. just use the hot wire from the gauge and all is well.

after some driving I believe its a little off, seems to read a bit high even though the truck doesn't run that hot. Oh well at least the needle moves now hehe.
