I read everywhere that the full float axle is just a matter of removing the 8 hexbolts and than the axle slides out easily.
My axle moves easily for about 1\8" but no more. Not even with some hammering. Are there defenitely no axles which have a clip somewhere as I would like to be sure of this before I start using more force...
Do you have any up and down slop in the axle? Any forwand/backward movement? If so, then yes, it will come out. Do you have the wheels blocked and the truck in neutral? If you are removing the wheel hub, please remember to put a little gear oil in the hub before you re-install it.
Sorry to respond only now, was away from home for some days and on the way back the waterpump went to heaven as well...And the left 4x4 manual hub went the same direction too when trying to get the car out of the mud....Ford keeps one busy it seems...
Yes there is some movement in the direction on the axle , mmm that is not up and down, but when pulling it moves just a little bit and then nothing more. Like when there would be a clip somewhere holding the lot.
Had the weels blocked but am not sure if I had the car in neutral though....
Will try that again later this week.
If there is a snap ring holding the axle in place, I would be extremely surprised. You could always remove the pan off the back of the housing and check. The only other possibility I can think of is either the housing is bent or the axle shaft itself is bent.

Damaged axle shaft is my vote. You should be able to pull the 8 bolts, and the axle slides out. There are NO clips on these axles 10.25 &10.50. Something is a miss. Especially if you are hammering it and it won't come out. I say at a minimum pull the diff cover and see what you can see. Probably not much. But the axle should slide right out. The only thing I can think of that would hold the shaft in, and it not being broke is twisted splines at the diff.
i would try lifting the rear axle off the ground, if nothing else raise the tire of the side you are trying to pull. it could be in a bind. there are no snap rings on the end of the axleshaft, i can go out and pull one now if you need a pic.
Knowing I would not break anything made a big difference. WIth a pry brar it finally popped out. (wish the waterpump job was going that easy too!)
Thanks all for your help!

i had to change out my water pump last summer and i really dont remember it being that bad of a job once you get a couple of things out of the way it was a breeze. good luck with the change out.

Removing the fan is the only real tough thing. Be sure you notice which direction the threads are on it. Also, it might be a good time to change the thermostat. Be sure you get the o-ring in place when putting the thermostat tube back on the pump.
