my 1994 f-350 7.3 IDI has 140,000 miles. On returning from the south I noticed I have a little leak in the rear main. Can a rear main seal be installed with out pulling the engine? thanks
Yup pull the trans. Are you sure its the rearman? It could also be the oil pan, wich you would have to pull the engine for, or if anything is leaking in the valy pan it will drain down the back of the engine and look like a rear main or rear of the oil pan.
The rear main seal is a one-piece. You can put a couple of sheet metal screws in it and attach a wire to the screws to yank it out. You don't have to pull the engine or drop the crankshaft to get it out or install the new one.
I'd recommend a new seal with a repair sleeve. It will cover the groove that inevitably wears into any crankshaft seal surface. If you've never installed one, be very careful when pressing in the new sleeve. If they get crimped at all, they'll leak. They have to go in straight. Some come with Loc-Tite, but that depends on who manufactures the sleeve. Its instructions should tell you whether or not you need it and the best means of pressing in the sleeve and seal.
They make special tools to install them get your hands on one if at all possible, assuming thats the leak. to remove it drill a small hole and screw in a threaded bit on the end of a small slide hammer and pop it out you may have to drill a couple oles on oposite side and swich back and fourth.
Try ford for the repair kit it comes with a speedy sleeve and an installation tool and all the instructions..... only need to buy the Permatex Aviation #3 sealant for the crank bolts...... cuzz they go into the oil cavity.
