you said you changed the solinoid.on the 460 with electric fuel pumps, there is a wire on the solinoid to run the fuel pumps . you have your line from the battery on one side.the wire that goes to the starter on the other side, the two big ones.then the two small ones. one is to engage the solinoid for starting, the other is for running your fuel pumps.when the wire fell off of mine my truck only ran for a short bit also.good luck p.s. i cann't spell very well eitherand my grammer sucks also. don't need it to run cranes brian

If joecool has the "hot fuel handling" system he might find that it gets power in 'start' directly, but from the oil pressure switch in run.***
It will take some cranking to fill the float bowls back up. Then when he lets go of the key when it catches the pumps would shut off and and they would run dry again.

Do you have an oil pressure issue? Is the switch bad? (it's the can screwed into the top of the block at the back of the intake manifold)

I really think he should get a diagram and follow these wires.
I would link to a post or thread, but see that Subford's photobucket diagrams are no longer available.
Franklin2 seems to understand this as well.....

No need to replace parts at random hoping to find something that "fixes it".
Just check to see that the switch is working and that you're getting power to the fuel pumps in 'run'.

Because from what I can understand of your posts it's not pumping fuel unless you're cranking it over????

I don't have this system so I can't go out and check. But I understand it in theory.

*edit* I would also check that you're getting power at the fuel pump relay in the 'run' position.

joecool3, Been reading your problem had the same on my 82. Your power should come from the oil pressure switch, the oil pressure switch will only close when there is pressure. You will not read voltage in the run position unless the engine is running. You can bypass the oil pressure switch by connecting the two wires together and take it out of the equation. If this does not cure it, check your ECM duraspark II for a proper ground. Just take a wire and run it from on the bolts that connect it to the fenderwell to a hard ground on the frame that cured my problem. Mine also started when I changed my ignition coil, and your green wire should go to the tach. Hope this helps out. I would ground the Duraspark II first.

Schematics

The schematics in my old Haynes Auto Repair Manual are so poorly published (small illegible print) I can't even read them from the book. If someone has a Chilton Manual they may be better, not sure. Otherwise I would send you a file (pic) or 2 of the "run" circuit schematic.

Joe, this would be a good time for you to go get a Chilton Manual if you can find one or even better a Ford Shop Manual (wish I had one too).

Good Luck
