I had a 1980 ford f 350 that i pull on the back about 6000 lbs of liquid with the gasser and didnt have much power, it had a 400 cid in it, I now have a 96 psd 5 spd, will this new truck be a differance. i never had a diesel before. its a f 550 super duty, 7.3 turbo.
Yes it will pull much different. The engine and gearing will make the difference. Chances are your 550 has at least 4.56 gears so that will make a bigger difference there.
the psd is geared different yes. the tach is about 3000 on the highway in fifth gear going 65 mph. i hope i notice a difference in pulling power and up hills. it took all the gasser had to go up a hill.
when it comes to whether your truck has the power to pull weight up a hill, the truck doesnt care if the weight is in the bed, on a trailer, etc. would you question whether the truck would tow 6k lbs? probably not. i routinely pull over 10k with a 5.4 gasser with no problems, and i can tell a big difference in it and my psd. and i think everyone in here would be in agreement that you will have zero problems with a lack of power pulling 6k lbs. id be willing to bet you wont even have to downshift......

The truck must be a torque monster!
I hope most of your time/mileage is spent in the streets.
At 3K rpm at 65 mph out on the interstate it is going to drink
fuel like a SOB.
Huge difference.....aside from feeling all the bumps one extra time due to the trailer, you won't be able to tell the trailer is back there. I use to pull my car hauler with a 5.7L 32v Lincoln Navigator and just switched to a F-350 Dually 7.3L Turbo Diesel. Man what a difference. The mileage is a big benefit with the diesel....seems to be getting close to 15mpg while the Navi would drop down to 7-8 mpg with trailer. The Navi would have to be left in drive, and I couldn't use cruise because it woukd shift in and out of 3rd all the time. With the F-350....I put it in 4th gear, set the cruise, and literally relax
without a doubt. my 5.4 is faster off the line and accelerates better at highway speeds, when both are empty. but the gasser starts slowing down a lot faster than the diesel once you start putting weight on it.

I agree I had a 99 f150 with the 5.4 in it. I actually had them both at the same time and was able to race them. The 5.4 deffently beat the PSD but put a load on them both and the PSD would come out first.
