psd knocking at idle

psd knocking at idle
my dads 2000 F250 making a loud knocking when it idles. you can put it in gear and it will almost stop or turn the rpms up alittle and will stop. it started suddenly while he was stopped idling running the A/C while talking on the phone.
it does not affect power in any way. i pulled the trans. thinking it might be
a broken flex plate nope. left the trans down, ran it, still there. took the belt off still there.
any ideas?
