I Have A 1988 F-350 Crew Cab Longbed 4x4 7.3l Diesel W/ C6 Auto Trans. I Am Hearing A Knocking Or Squeaking Sound When The Tranny Is In Reverse Or Any Forward Gear. It Does Not Do It In Park. When The Truck Is In Drive And It Is Knocking Or Squeaking As I Press The Accelorator It Knocks Faster Until It Changes Into 2nd Gear. Then The Knock Is Gone Until I Return To Idle Speed And The Vehicle Is At A Complete Stop. What Could This Be?
That's kind of a strange sounding problem you've got there. Could the sound be coming from the bellhousing? Maybe some loose nuts on the torque converter? Maybe a cracked flexplate?
Is it for sure the sound is coming from the trans area? I was kind of thinking a nozzle is breaking down at idle and when the load is placed on the engine (trans in gear) it is worsening the problem until the fuel flow overcomes the nozzle weakness. Then when it goes back to idle, it starts over again. Just a thought.
These kind of troubles are pretty hard to pinpoint. How about vacuum leak?? The C-6 does have a vacuum modulator on the right side rear of the trans, a vacuum leak can make a lot of weird sounds along with affecting other vacuum operated parts if the leak get bad enough. Just thought I'd throw another suggestion out there.
If it's something in the engine you should see some kind of weird smoke out the pipe to go along with it. I don't know about a vacuum leak, unless the vac. pump is rattling. Maybe an exhaust leak, but those are rare on these engines.
