As far as I know, the only way to tell is by stroke... Possibly by year as well

NO RINGS but there is a pin behind the spring. Lightly compress the spring in a vice until the pin is visible and clear on both sides. Push the pin through just enough to clear the shaft so that the drive will slide off. Push the pin back in enough to ensure that the spring wont come off. That is it! Reassemble in reverse order. When you put a new drive on and test the starter the drive will spin in to the crank position and not return as it requires the engine to overspin it for a return. This is not a problem and as soon as you crank it it will return to the rest position.
