I have been diggng around the net for a week. I found out today that the timing pointer for the 292 was a bolt on item. It bolted up in front of the timing cover and is generally missing.
I'm still working on research. All I have heard here is to advance the distributer until it runs rough then back it off to a smooth idle. this is good for a quick fix but I want the Facts!
Doing this can cause valve burn, detonation, and overheating depending on the condition of the engine.
If you have a shop manual it tells you. If not
here goes, I would pull the #1 spark plug, and
crank the engine over by hand( make sure you turn
clockwise). While turning put your finger in #1 hole
and feel for when the cylinder comes up on the compression
stroke. When it comes all the way up and wants to blow
your finger out, thats Top Dead Center(TDC) and you should
mark it somehow if you don't have a marker. You can make
one out of some sheet metal. you just need some kind of
reference. I hope this helps. I'll check back if you have
more ? good luck
I appreciate the info but that isn't exactly what I am asking for.
I am looking for specific numbers and specs to help in diagnosing the current condition of the engine.
For example, I have done a basic "get it running smooth" tune up. However, I want to get all setting as close to factory as possible. By setting the timing, I can determine if the cam lobes are worn or if thwe timing chain is loose. Also, When points and condensor are changed, it has a direct effect on the timing of the engine.
I am waiting for my manual to arrive in the next few days and I will post some of the most commonly asked tune up questions then.
