Oil pressure

I was driving around some back roads today and had a terrible scare.
I noticed that the oil pressure in my truck dropped to almost 0 psi.
When I start the truck from cold, the pressure is up about 50 psi but after driving a while, it drops below 30. The longer I drive the lower it gets.
I suspect the guage is bad since its a cheap Walmart set but I checked into it anyway.
The line is run to the front driverside of the block above the oil pan and behind the fuel pump.
I removed the fittings, cleaned the orfice, reinstalled them with teflon tape. Then I went in the truck and removed the line behind the guage, started the engine and pumped about a 1/4 pint of oil from the line and no globs.
The engine is what I think is a 292 and was wondering if there was anywhere else to tap into the oil system closer to the pump.
I found a plug just above the pump on the drivers side but wasn't sure if this is the place to use or not.

Oil pressure

On my 272 the sending unit goes to the plug above the oil pump and the one you are using is the one that the supercharged cars took oil to cool the supercharger. You should have fairly equal pressure at both spots. If you don't I would think you have restriction (paraffin from old oils). Remember this it doesn't matter what the gauge says if it isn't getting the appropriate pressure to the bearings. I haven't studied the Y-Block oiling system enough to trace its path yet so I don't know where the ports are in relation to the bearings and rocker arms and such.
Any help out there.

Thanks Charles

Oil pressure

Thanks for the response.
I noticed when I pumped the line into the cup that the oil is really thick. It was changed two days before I bought it. (the sticker is still on the winshield) the pressure from the line was like puoring tea in a glass. I figured it would be "shooting" out of the line.
Any more info would be helpful.

Oil pressure

when or how long ago was "2 days before you bought it"?
When you purchased this unknown motor, (new oil change or not) I would of ran tropartic thru it a couple of times at 500 miles. you have to realize that this motor is over 30 years old, and I don't even know its history.
Low oil pressure has 2 different directions.... 1 being that lots of motors dropped to 7 lbs after warmed up, and thats all it took to keep the idiot light off.
2 i wouldn't actually trust that walmart guage, but your mains could b shot, and thats why they "changed the oil 2 days before you bought it". fresh oil may hold pressure for a while until it limbers up......
What weight r u using.... I would b using 20-50 or straight 30 depending on how cold it gets there, and then watch your oil pressure gauge...
Hope this calms the nerves next time u r out and about
I had an "Y" block that when the oil level was low the pump would actually cavatate when turning... light would come on at any speed, during a turn and scare the hell out of you, but it was good the whole time.

Oil pressure

Hi out there...I have a 1960 F-350 w/292...oil pressure 60lbs cold start, 45 or better running. The gauge line is connected to the front hole, and I have the old canister filter.

Oil pressure

i moved the oil line from the front hole to the rear hole above the rear fitting. The pressure on the new guage reads 5 psi higher. I still drop pressure after warming up but it holds pretty steady at 35 psi around town in 30 - 40 mph traffic.
Has anyone heard of a high volume oil pump for the Y-blocks? I was also thinking about adding an oil cooler to help keep the oi; cooler thus increasing the pressure and keeping the mains lubed. I know the mains are getting oiled but I get very little on the rockers.
Any suggestions?
