I have a 2003 Excursion 7.3L turbo diesel. I experienced a wierd tranny issue while driving this weekend. It seems the transmission will not shift beyond 3rd gear. The overdrive light started blinking and I shut everything down started back up but same problem. The light is off but I had to drive 50mph (max).
What could be the problem ?
There's a lot of things that could be the problem. The code that was stored in the computer's memory when the light flashed is the best indication of what's wrong. Get the code read (you might have to go to a dealer to get it read) and then someone can determine where to start.
To build on what Mark suggested...Advance Auto as well as some other auto parts places (AutoZone and such) will usually read codes for free (they obviously want you to buy the parts needed THERE for the repair)...so it's good marketing for them...
I'd check your local Advance/AutoZone first to get the code read...just a thought...
Have you checked your transmission fluid level?? When is the last time your transmission was serviced? I agree with both mark and joe. You should take it to Ford though. I have had this problem before. I had my torque converter changed out for a better one and the service tech didn't add enough oil back after the change.

My apologies...I didn't realize you needed to actually read the tranny...I thought the code would be stored in the PCM and accessed thru the OBDII...that sounds like a bad assumption on my part...sounds like the dealer it is!
The code is stored in the PCM and accessed through the OBDII port. The trans does not store codes. The problem is that the software in the PCM won't tell a generic scan tool anything about codes that don't light the Check Engine light.
